Most steps are one call to a service and cost a credit each. A run that runs code gets a sandbox and costs by its time. What changes between plans is how many credits you get a month, how big a workflow may be, and how long a step is allowed to take.

The short version

What a credit is

Two ways to spend one. A workflow made only of steps that call a service starts no machine and costs one credit for every step it runs. A workflow with a step that runs code gets a sandbox and is charged for the seconds it holds it, rounded up, and never less than one credit. In a sandbox, ten steps that finish in five seconds cost the same as one.

A sandbox run of 5 seconds1 credit
A sandbox run of 30 seconds2 credits
A sandbox run of a minute3 credits
A sandbox run of four minutes12 credits

So a short sandbox workflow on the hour is about 730 credits a month, and the same workflow every five minutes is nearer 8,800. A workflow of three service-call steps costs three credits a run, without a sandbox, and the same step run over a list of forty items costs forty. Video is the exception worth knowing: encoding holds a machine for as long as it takes, and that is what it is charged for.
